miles NE of shore of Nitinat Lake, Vancouver Island, British Columbia:
48° 50' N, 124° 43' W: The pilot continued VFR flight into unfavorable weather conditions. A factor in the accident was the pilot's misuse of engine controls in that he failed to maintain sufficient carburetor heat to eliminate icing in the carburetor. The aircraft while in a climb experience engine failure due to carburetor icing, struck trees on the hillside and crashed. The aircraft apparently took off from Nitinat Lake, where Cecil Rhodes and his business partner Cecil Arthur Rawlings (C & C Transportation Co.) had been on a fishing trip on Sunday 29 May. The Seabee was based at Patricia Bay Airport. Operator (Owner): Cecil Rhodes. Damage: Destroyed. Injuries: Pilot Cecil Rhodes (PPL # VRP-4343, age 45) - killed in crash, passenger Cecil Arthur Rawlings (age 59) - died of injuries. [Canadian CAR File # 5002-989]. The wreck was not located by RCAF SAR aircraft until Friday, 3 June. A ground rescue party arrived at the scene the next day. Rhodes was found dead 10 feet from wreckage, probably pulled out by Rawlings. A big search operation was arranged to find Rawlings. Rawlings was found dead by soldiers on 11 June, 13 days after crash. He was found some 1,500 feet from crash site with severe injuries to head and stomach, and a broken leg. He probably survived for only one night. Rawlings' nephew, fishing guide Claude James Creed Jr. (23) participating in the search was killed when a cable broke when being hoisted from a RCAF SAR helicopter on Tuesday 7 June. |
