Supreme Court suits over drowning of a man and a boy and injuries to a third passenger when an amphibian airplane flipped over on hitting Irondequoit Bay and sank in 45 feet of water July 27, 1947, were announced settled yesterday for $10,800. The bodies of Charles Amalfi Sr. 38, of 189 Portland Ave. and Franklin D. Mathias, 14, of Bay View Rd Irondequoit, were recovered in dragging-operations the next day off Bay View after the plane had been raised from the bottom of the bay. The Mathias boy was still in the plane when it went under. Amalfi was struggling in the water but disappeared before rescuers could reach him. Amalfi's son, Charles Amalfi Jr., then 10, and the pilot, William Ernst, 40, of 61 Hubbell Pk., thrown near the plane, were hauled out by a group of five men who raced to the scene in boats. The amphibian had been based at Bay View Hotel. The Mathias boy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mathias Sr., operate the hotel. Suits were brought against Ernst as pilot and Michael Macaluso as owner of the plane. Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, 16 February 1950 |
